SUMMARY:

ABSTRACT: In order to be successful in antiretroviral treatment, the proper use of prescribed drugs is necessary, thus generating a challenge for public health: adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). The pharmacist, the professional responsible for making the connection between the medication and the patient, has the potential to positively impact the adequate follow-up of pharmacotherapy. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of pharmaceutical interventions on adherence to antiretroviral pharmacotherapy of individuals with HIV/AIDS in the state of Alagoas. For this purpose, a prospective controlled interventional study was carried out in two health services in that state, where 67 participants were divided into two groups: G1: group that received pharmaceutical interventions (n=32) and G2: non-intervention group (n=35 ) consisting of patients assisted only by the usual dispensing process of the health service. For verify the level of information that patients held about their antiretroviral pharmacotherapy, the instrument validated used by Raehl et al. (2002). For assess adherence, the instrument proposed by Remor (2007) and the history of medication withdrawal at the pharmacy were initially used. The results of laboratory tests of viral load were used to measure adherence before and after the interventions. The patients were followed by a clinical pharmacist for a period of 10 months. From the results obtained, it was possible to observe that regarding the degree of knowledge of the 67 patients about their pharmacotherapy, 74.33% were unable to inform the name of the drug they were using, 83.58% were unable to inform the dose, 58.21% said not knowing if there was any type of interaction with food or if it could be administered close to meal times. However, most knew the indication 98.51% as well as the administration times 94.02% of their medications. Regarding adherence to antiretroviral pharmacotherapy, it was observed that only a minority of patients presented adherence considered excellent/strict in both G1 (18.75%) and G2 (20.00%), and that in general, considering G1 and G2, 38.81% had low adherence. As for the withdrawal of medications from the pharmacy throughout the study, there was a greater frequency of G1 (90.62%) when compared to G2 (77.14%). Finally, when analyzing the results of laboratory tests for viral load performed before and during pharmaceutical follow-up, it was possible to observe an increase in the number of participants with undetectable viral load results (< 50 copies/mL) (from 56.25% to 93.75%) in the intervention group (p<0.01). For the non-intervention group, there was no difference before and after the 10-month period (from 74.29% to 74.29%). The present study shows that the interventions performed by the pharmacist were able to contribute to improving adherence due to the reduction in viral load values for patients who received the intervention. In addition, it reinforces the importance of the presence of the pharmacist in the multidisciplinary team developing clinical activities, promoting the rational use of medicines.
