SUMMARY:

nanoparticles containing essential oil with insecticidal properties
Resumo em inglês: In this scientific research, the synthesis of nanoparticles was performed using a chitosan extracted in an unconventional way, from an insect. The first part reports how the extraction of chitin and its conversion into chitosan, through a deacetylation reaction, was carried out. Chitin is the main structural component of the arthropod cuticle and chitosan is produced from it, which has several applicability in several areas, such as pharmaceuticals, food and agriculture. The large production of chitosan comes from crab and shrimp shells. The purpose of this research is to produce chitosan through chitin obtained from the Rhynchophorus palmarum, considered an important palm pest insect, which has neither economic direction nor adequate disposal, after management, in Alagoas and other states. To prove that the polymer was obtained, an analysis was carried out in Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), obtaining a result consistent with other studies. The second part is related to the applicability of chitosan in nanotechnology, with the production of nanoparticles of this biopolymer obtained from R. palmarum and encapsulation of an essential oil (EO) in them. The EO used in this study is clove (Syzygium aromaticum), obtained from a natural products store in the city of Maceió-AL and analyzed by Gas Chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS), which revealed a content of 90.71% of eugenol, the major substance responsible for the insecticidal properties of this oil. With the nanoparticles, zeta potential and average size tests were carried out, obtaining satisfactory results in terms of size, but requiring further analysis to elucidate the properties of this nanoparticle. In addition, qualitative character tests will be carried out with an insect, Tribolium casteneum, considered an important pest of stored grains (rice, corn, wheat, among others). The production of these nanoparticles with clove EO indicates to be a promising strategy for the control of insect pests, being an alternative to conventional insecticides, which bring problems to human health when misused by the handlers of these products, for example.
