SUMMARY:

Leishmaniasis is a neglected, infectious and non-contagious disease that is caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania. There are records of it all over the world, but it is endemic in places with more precarious health services. Leishmania has two evolutionary forms: promastigote and amastigote, and two main clinical manifestations: tegumentary and visceral, the latter being the most worrying because, if not treated, it can lead the patient to death. Despite the great complexity of the disease, the therapeutic arsenal is still quite limited, with pentavalent antimonials as the first choice and drugs such as amphotericin b and pentamidine as the second choice. However, this therapy available on the market has undesirable adverse effects, in addition to significant cytotoxicity and parasite resistance. Faced with this problem, the present study evaluated extracts of fungi that produce secondary metabolites from Antarctica, where the biomass of these fungi was produced, extraction with ethyl acetate and acetone solvents, pigment concentration, drying, dilution and cell viability tests ( MTT) and evaluation of leishmanicidal activity against the promastigote form L. amazonensis and L. chagasi. Five extracts of yeast (19L15, 4L2, 2L19, NL1 and GL19) and six of filamentous fungi (2EMP4, 3EMP4, 2FFLQ6, 4FFLQ2, 5YP4 and 1EMP1) were produced. Until now, the cell viability assay and the leishmanicidal evaluation of the five yeast extracts were carried out, at concentrations of 100, 30, 10, 3, 1 and 0.3 µM, where the extracts showed a maximum cytotoxic effect of 40 .54 ± 3.37%; 24.37 ± 3.66%; 29.09 ± 3.57%; 6.28 ± 1.00%; 22.98 ± 1.63%, respectively. When tested against Leishmania, the extracts showed no activity to kill the parasites. In an attempt to find new candidates for prototypes of leishmanicidal drugs, new experiments should be carried out with filamentous fungi.
