Faced with reading comprehension difficulties detected among some students in the fifth year of Elementary School, this work aims to investigate the reading competence of these students through verbal reading protocols. The assessment of reading competence is important in order to verify the level of development of students' textual comprehension and to identify possible difficulties with a view to remediation activities. Verbal protocols are a useful tool for collecting data on students' reading and text comprehension processes. The participants of this research will be the students of a fifth grade class of Elementary School of a rural public school in São Caetano, municipality located in the rural region of Pernambuco, whose students will be applied verbal reading protocols, in individual sessions, with the objective of check the level of reading comprehension of these students. The results will be analyzed and compared with the expected standards for students in that year/grade. The analysis of the verbal protocols will allow to identify the strategies used by the students during the reading and the possible causes of the presented difficulties.
