THE PEIXE BOI PROJECT AS A GENERATING THEME FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: INVESTIGATIVE ACTIVITIES WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The lack of knowledge about environmental problems, unplanned tourism, inappropriate conduct when seeing the manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) can lead to serious consequences for a species that is at risk of extinction. The Peixe Boi Project appears as an alternative for monitoring these animals as well as preservation work, in this sense, in formal Brazilian education, environmental education contents are worked on in a transversal way, seeking knowledge for changes in the interaction of man with the environment in the broader sense. In this process of scientific literacy there is a search for strategies that enable successful teaching and learning of topics related to environmental preservation. Generating words are pointed out by Paulo Freire as tools for clarifying ideas, where students' knowledge becomes dialogues for knowledge, the strategy dialogues with the Teaching by Research approach where the problem unfolds into a survey of hypotheses that will be confronted to investigated and organized data, so that from then on the student is guided to the systematization and application of knowledge, during the stages of teaching through investigation, students are protagonists of their learning. With this vision, this research intends to discuss: How can the use of the Peixe Boi Project as a Generating Theme for investigative activities influence the scientific literacy of high school students? The relevance of this study lies in its functioning for initial and continuing teacher training.
