SUMMARY:

The need for an energy transition has become progressively evident to society. The interest in alternative
energies opens space for photovoltaic energy, which has caused an increasing number of scientific and
technological research. In this context, the present work aims to select patents whose protection is not
extended to Brazil, which can be replicated and, eventually, can lead to innovations that develop and
consolidate companies that take part in the photovoltaic energy chain of Alagoas. Along with that, presenting
an overview of photovoltaic technologies, highlighting the main technologies, the countries that dominate this
market, and the biggest players internationally. Regarding the patent search, carried out in the Orbit patent
bank, the partial results show an evolution in the number of patents related to photovoltaic technologies, and
points to the United States as the headquarters of the companies that own the technology studied, as well as
the leading country in the protection of photovoltaic technologies. It is noticeable that China, the leader in the
production and installation of solar panels, has a much smaller number of patents filed since the players are
new in the market, and they do not have representative technological production. However, China has an
intellectual property strategy, a highly consuming domestic market, and government policies and public
subsidies that place companies in that country as important global competitors in the photovoltaic industry,
and thus deserves to be analyzed. Patents free of reproduction in Brazil will be identified in the next stage of
the research, while the prioritization of technologies and analysis regarding their application in Alagoas will
be an assessment of experts in the energy segment, through a prioritization matrix.
