SUMMARY:

This is a prospective study of Geographical Indication in the Indication of Origin modality of
(fermented) jabuticaba wine produced in Serra das Pias, municipality of Palmeira dos Índios-AL.
As for the methodology, the characteristic of the study is descriptive and exploratory, with an
applied conception; bibliographic, survey and documentary type; with a qualitative-quantitative
approach; the (fermented) wine production chain was mapped, as well as the main partners and
their contributions. The possibility of registering a Geographical Indication for the product in
question will enhance the tradition of local know-how dating back to the 70's, adding value and
greater visibility to the product. The jabuticabas, raw material of the fermented, come from
jabuticaba trees spread in the region through the natural process without human intervention, and
their cultivation has agroecological practices. The production of fermented, previously done
individually and disjointedly, is now organized through cooperativism, strengthening the links and
improving the production process. Production is still artisanal, but has been structuring and
migrating to the agro-industrial production process. As a result, it was revealed the history of
(fermented) jabuticaba wine, the productive context and its strengths and weaknesses for the
request for registration of Geographical Indication; as well as the preparation of a proposal and
protocol for the registration of a collective mark. Several challenges are posed to adapt the
product to good production practices, ranging from the structuring of the fermented production
chain to registration with control bodies for large-scale commercialization. The product is the
largest representative of the Mixed Cooperative of Peasant Production and Commercialization -
COOPCAM, which in addition to fermented products, produces and sells other jabuticaba and
rural products. The Brazilian vocation for agribusiness, given its diversity of flora and fertile lands,
favors the development of products and the generation of wealth.
