The (fermented) jabuticaba wine from Serra das Pias as a proposal for a geographical indication: the
strengthening of the production chain and cooperativism

The Geographical Indication (GI) is the recognition of the geographical environment thatproduces/provides a service in a notorious way or that contains qualities/characteristics thatare differentiated by their relationship with the environment and know-how. Theidentification of the geographical environment that produces or provides a service that canreceive a GI signal can benefit from adding value and increasing the local economy,generating more employment and income. In addition to valuing the product and producer,the entire production chain is benefited. The survey of Geographical Indication records inBrazil found that agribusiness products lead the Geographical Indication records. Jabuticaba,a native fruit of Brazil, began to arouse greater interest in the industry and in research centersin product development. The (fermented) jabuticaba wine from Serra das Pias in Palmeirados Índios, produced by the cooperative system, is a product with typical GI characteristicsthat needs to be investigated. The general objective is to carry out a prospective study ofGeographical Indication in the modality Indication of Origin of the (fermented) wine ofjabuticaba produced in Serra das Pias, municipality of Palmeira dos Índios-AL. As for themethodology, the characteristic of the study is descriptive and exploratory, with an appliedconception; bibliographic, survey and documentary type. As a result, the history of(fermented) jabuticaba wine was revealed, its lack of productive infrastructure; label analysisfor trademark registration purposes; identification of its production chain; strengths,weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the Geographical Indication claim revealed in theSWOT analysis; Coopcam collective trademark registration protocol; verification of lack ofregistration of the product and the producer establishment in the control bodies for large-scalecommercialization; main patent applicant countries using jabuticaba as a raw material; mainIPC codes found in the Espacenet patent base.
