SUMMARY:

Geographical indication is the recognition, in the form of a registration granted by the INPI, to a geographic region that has become known or has links related to the qualityand characteristics of a product or service. This is an Intellectual Property right that is divided into Denomination of Origin and Indication of Origin. The hinterland of Alagoas has the potential for the recognition of several Geographical Indications (GI), but the present work is restricted to the study of the Boa Noite embroidery that is produced on Ilha do Ferro, in Pão de Açúcar/AL. Through Action Research, we sought to analyze and observe the scenario in which embroidery is inserted, in addition to surveying the main obstacles related to Boa Noite Embroidery, in order to identify the  necessary  elements  for  the  maturation  of  the  community.  in  the  course  of  the  search  for  the  future recognition of Geographical Indication of the geographical area of embroidery. In addition to the relevance of the IG to the referent community, the objective was also to study the feasibility of a collective brand for the  artists  of  the  island.  For  this  reason,  a  visit  was  made  to  the  embroiderers  linked  to  the  Art-ilha Cooperative,  as well  as to the other embroiderers on the island, in order to understand the way they  work, learn,  sell  and  produce.  It  is  also  worth  mentioning  that  meetings  were  held  with  civil  servants  from  the municipal government to facilitate the survey of  demands and articulate  a project to assist them in solving local difficulties. Through work with the community  and the government, important points were identified that need more attention so that the criteria required by the National  Institute of  Industrial Property  for the recognition of the indication of origin of the embroidery Boa Noite da Ilha do Ferro, as well as as the collective mark that can help to value the work performed in the region in question.
