SUMMARY:

The objective was to describe the frequency of positive dogs and epidemiological aspects for canine viceral Leishmaniasis in the city of Maceió and metropolitan region based on a diagnostic laboratory database. In the period between February 2021 and May 2022, 949 samples were analyzed in a diagnostic laboratory in the city of Maceió. Of the 949 samples, 76 were used for PCR diagnosis. The samples come from Maceió - Alagoas and the metropolitan region. The data were analyzed through the study of absolute and relative frequencies based on the following outcomes: Race, Sex, Age group, Positive and negative results and Type of test. For the analysis, the results of dogs evaluated for diagnosis of the disease in three RIFI, ELISA and PCR tests were studied. The tests were carried out using whole blood samples and spinal taps. Of the 949 samples analyzed for the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis, 253 (27%) animals tested positive for canine visceral leishmaniasis and 696 (73%) tested negative. Based on the type of test, 7 (2.77%) tested positive for RIFI, 52 (20.55%) for ELISA, and the remaining 194 (76%) samples were analyzed by RIFI/ELISA. The age range was divided between: puppies up to 1 year old: 51 (20.16%), adults between 1-7 years old: 149 (58.89%), elderly (8 +) 45 (17.79%) and ages not informed (n.i.): 8 (3.16%). Male dogs had a higher frequency of infection 59% (149/253) than female dogs 41% (104/253). According to the results, we can consider CVL endemic in the city of Maceió and the metropolitan region, which is why work must be carried out to control the disease based on the broad diagnosis of the disease in dogs, especially those living on the streets, in addition to the adoption of other disease control measures. There is a need for broader diagnostic studies regarding LCV in the state of Alagoas, in line with euthanasia measures for infected animals with specific health management in endemic areas.
