SUMMARY:

This study aimed to determine the normal VHS (Vertebral Heart Size) values of American Bully dogs. This method relates the measured value of the heart in its short and long axes in thoracic vertebrae of the animal. Proposed by Buchanan and Bucheler in 1995, it establishes the normal values of the size of the cardiac silhouette for dogs, with a reference value of 9.7±0.5 vertebrae. However, some dog breeds diverge from the reference values established in the literature, due to the different morphologies characteristic of each racial group, as well as their anatomical particularities. Thoracic radiography of 50 healthy American Bully animals were evaluated to obtain VHS values. Radiographic images were divided into two groups: Group I - 7 to 11 months of age and Group II - 1 to 5 years of age. The data indicate that there was no difference between the mean VHS values observed for the two age categories evaluated (p>0.05). VHS showed an overall mean ± standard deviation of 11.68±0.74 and minimum and maximum values of 10.1 and 12.6, respectively. The VHS of American Bully dogs differs from the reference value for the species (p<0.05) obtained by Buchanan and Bucheler.
