SUMMARY:

Ozone therapy is a technique used in several specialties of equine medicine. However, there are few studies of its use in vaquejada athletes horses. The present article aims to evaluate the potential effect of ozone gas administered by two different routes on hematological, biochemical and oxidative stress marker values in vaquejada athletes. For this, 9 healthy horses were used that followed a training protocol, alternating moments of specific training, aerobic training and rest in paddock. The animals were submitted to both treatments, where a wash-out of 8 days between them was considered. For the control moment, the pre-treatment baseline value was considered, with each animal being its own control. The AHTMO group received a volume of 600ml of the O2-O3 mixture at a concentration of 60 µg/mL homogenized in two transfusion bags containing 300ml of blood each. The IR group received 5mL of gas per kg of live weight, at a concentration of 15µg/kg, performed every 24 hours on three consecutive days. The results for the hematological variables were positive for the values of red blood cells hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV and CHCM when compared to the control for the two groups of treatments. In the leukometric variables, only statistical significance was found in eosinophils in the AHTMO group. The biochemical variables showed significant results for lactate and AST when comparing the post-treatment moments with the control. Malondialdehyde values were significantly reduced when compared to the control moment. No statistically significant differences were found in the comparisons between groups. Thus, we can conclude that treatment with ozone therapy, regardless of the route used, provides an increase in erythrocyte values, promoting an improvement in blood rheological properties. In addition, the therapy has been shown to be effective in controlling oxidative stress in athletic horses, making it an option to replace conventional antioxidant supplements.
