SUMMARY:

The goat species is a great promise for creating and producing, for having adaptive characteristics in tolerating climatic variables, withstand long periods of water scarcity and for its ability to utilize food water more effectively, compared to monogastric. In view of the above, the objective was to evaluate the hematological and physiological parameters of goats fed cactus pear as the only source of water. The experiment was conducted at the Centro Demonstrativo e Experimental de Zootecnia (CEDEZOO) of the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), in the municipality of Arapiraca. Thirty-five male goats were used, with an average initial weight of 18.6 + 1.44 kg and 8 months old. The goats were randomly distributed in 5 treatments, consisting of 2 levels of forage cactus (25% or 55%), each level with or without access to drinking water, plus a control treatment (diet without palm and with access to water). The experiment lasted 90 days, blood samples were collected by puncturing the jugular vein, about 4 hours after feeding, for carrying out the blood count and biochemical profile and at the beginning and end of the experimental period, the physiological parameters were evaluated, among them, rectal temperature, skin temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate. The variables were submitted to statistical analysis according to a completely randomized design in a factorial scheme 2 x 2 + 1 control. There was a difference between the control treatment and the average of the other treatments for the urea variable. There was no isolated effect of palm level (P), access or not to water (A) or PxA interaction for any of the other biochemical variables evaluated (P>0.05). Blood count variables, with the exception of hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cells, suffered an isolated effect for the provision of cactus pear, and for access or not to water (P<0.05). There was a significant difference in CxF for all hours in rectal temperature (P<0.05). There was no significant effect for any skin temperature variable. The respiratory rate showed a difference in CxF for 4 variables (13:00; 15:00; 17:00 and 19:00) and heart rate had a significant effect on all variables (7 am; 9 am; 1 pm; 3 pm; 5 pm and 7 pm) on CxF and 4 variables (11 am; 3 pm; 5 pm and 7 pm) on P (palm level effect). Cactus pear supplied to goats in proportions of 25% and 55% is a great ally. The characteristic of adaptability of the goat species facilitates its survival, without causing damage to the health and well-being of the animals.
