SUMMARY:

The objective of this study was to characterize the anatomical variations observed in the extrahepatic system of domestic felines to reduce iatrogenic post-surgical complications of the hepatobiliary tract. This study was carried out on 20 domestic feline cadavers with no history of surgical treatment that compromised the anatomy of the hepatobiliary system. The entire liver was removed with the gallbladder and the segment of the descending duodenum for morphological and morphometric studies of the cystic duct, bile duct and gallbladder, in addition to evaluating the emergence and segment of the hepatic ducts through hepatic lobation, according to the Nomina Anatomica Veterinária (NAV, 2017). The length of the cystic duct (average of 20.9 m) and the gallbladder (average of 40.7 mm) showed a significant correlation with weight (p<0.05). No variable showed a significant correlation with age or a significant difference between the sexes (p>0.05). It was observed that domestic felines have on average two hepatic ducts joined to the cystic duct, giving rise to the bile duct. 71% of hepatic ducts are branches of smaller hepatic ducts originating from at least two hepatic lobes. Regarding the junction of the cystic duct with the hepatic duct, in 50% (n= 10/20) of the samples collected, the first hepatic duct to join the cystic duct comes from the left side of the liver, while in the other 50% (n = 10/20), the union occurs on the right hepatic side. It can be concluded from the results of this work that the length of the cystic duct and gallbladder are correlated with the weight of the domestic cats studied.
