Canine visceral Leishmaniasis is a disease with zoonotic potential with a high fatality rate, being the most severe among Leishmaniasis. The canine population in Brazil comprises approximately 55 million animals, causing a constant need for updates regarding the diagnosis, treatment and control of the disease. This work sought to gather the epidemiological aspects of canine Visceral Leishmaniasis in Maceió - Alagoas and metropolitan region, from February 2021 to March 2022 and review the main diagnostic methods, discussing and presenting advantages and disadvantages. Methods: Data were obtained from 949 samples of suspected animals and were organized by: breed, sex, age group, location, positives and negatives and type of test. Three tests were used: RIFI, ELISA and PCR to diagnose the disease. The positive results highlighted adult animals between 1 – 7 years old (58.89%) and of these, 41% were female. Given the constant evolution and seriousness of the disease, it is necessary that new control measures be adopted.
