AREA: Medicina Veterinária
SUMMARY:

The use of horses, donkeys and mules for transport, loading and traction are very old activities, and are still widely observed in small cities, outskirts of metropolises and especially in activities in rural areas. Despite its wide use, the topic addressing the well-being of these animals is quite recent, aiming to increase the production capacity, longevity and health of these animals. Public policies in the state of Rio de Janeiro and in the cities of Recife, Porto Alegre and Curitiba were created aiming to eradicate these activities, however, most of them with little effectiveness. The present study was carried out with the aim of determining the profile of horses, using hematological parameters such as Globular Volume, Total Plasma Proteins, muscle biochemistry through the CK enzyme and the calculation of load capacity that horses can pull without harming their health and wellbeing of these animals for the subsequent creation of efficient legislation to improve the working conditions of these animals. For the study, 76 mixed-breed urban draft horses of varying ages and sexes from the zona da mata region of the state of Alagoas were evaluated. Physiological parameters, body score, body weight, carrying capacity, hematological and biochemical parameters of the animals were evaluated. To determine the profile of these animals, it was possible to notice the predominance of females, with adult age (between 36 and 168 months). Most of the animals presented increased heart and respiratory rates, as well as anemia and an increase in the CK enzyme, which show the need to determine the profile and periodic load capacity of these animals, for later determination of a traction load limit, and the importance of creating public policies that regulate this type of animal work activity.
