SUMMARY:

Leprosy is considered a public health problem in several
countries worldwide, due to the high number of new cases,
morbidity and socioeconomic impacts that are results from its
complications. Recent studies have shown that leprosy patients
may report experiencing chronic pain during treatment or post-
discharge, which affects physical and emotional well-being,
relationships, leading to psychological problems and social
isolation. There are basically two types of chronic pain that may
be present in leprosy patients: a) neuropathic pain and b)
nociceptive pain. However, little is known about their prevalence
in this population. Moreover, it is believed that pain can be
associated with a worse quality of life in this population. Thus,
this study aims to identify the prevalence of chronic pain, its
types and to verify the association between pain and quality of
life in and people affected by leprosy being treated or followed up
in Arapiraca, Alagoas, Brazil. For this purpose, a cross-sectional
study was conducted regarding individuals older than 15 years
affected by leprosy, of both sexes, under treatment or post-

discharge follow-up in the Reference Center for the disease in
the municipality of Arapiraca, Alagoas, Brazil, in the period from
August 2018 to March 2020. Data collection was collected from
the application of an instrument addressing clinical and
demographic data. Medical records and notification forms were
consulted to complement such information. Then, we evaluated:
a) quality of life using the WHO-QoL-BREF questionnaire; and b)
the characterization of pain using the Douler Neuropathique en 4
questions (DN4) for individuals who reported pain. Both
questionnaires are validated to be applied in Brazil. All the
information obtained were coded and entered into a database.
Exploratory analyses were conducted in order to identify the
prevalence of pain, and its types, as well as to verify the
association between pain and quality of life. The individuals were
informed about the objectives of the study, invited to participate
and to sign the Informed Consent Form. The study was
approved by the Ethics Committee on Research of the Federal
University of Alagoas (UFAL) (Protocol No. 3938849) and
followed all the recommendations of the Helsinki Declaration and
CONEPE Resolution n˚ 466/2012. The information to be
obtained by the present study is essential to know the impact of
chronic pain and its types on the quality of life of people affected
by leprosy. In addition, such information will serve as a basis to
guide public health policies to address the main problems
resulting from leprosy.
