Descriptive analysis of municipal public libraries in the state of Alagoas: an exploratory study

Within the context of Information Science, the theme public library is verified. The public library is a place of culture and appropriation of information, and therefore it must have its actions linked to society. In this scenario, the present research addresses concepts and origins about the public library, bringing its relationship with Information Science and Librarianship. Furthermore, it punctuates the concepts concerning the existing municipal public libraries in the State of Alagoas, showing different aspects of them, such as, for instance, information on its creation, amount of collection and training of its representatives. In this context, the research proposes to develop an exploratory study, based on the legally instituted municipal public libraries in the State of Alagoas, showing, consequently, some particular aspects of each one of them. As a methodological foundation it uses descriptive research, bibliographical research, and also field research. Besides, it employs a quantitative approach. Data will be collected through information based on the literature fixed in databases, for the composition of the theoretical framework, and, for the field survey, an analysis will be made through e-mails, websites, social networks, among other means of contact. In conclusion, therefore, without exhausting the discussions and fostering possibilities for future research, it is known to say that the public library is a way of knowledge for society, since its actions must be developed in order to form and contribute to the knowledge of the citizen. Moreover, it is relevant to promote culture in these spaces, since public libraries bring histories and memories.
