SUMMARY:

Discusses the importance of the Nossa Senhora da Piedade necropolis, in Maceió, as a
heritage, memory and information for the city and for Alagoas. The research problem asks:
what actions are carried out for the (re)knowledge of the municipal cemetery of Maceió N. S.
da Piedade, as a cultural heritage and unit of information and memory. Its general objective
is to analyze what has been done to recognize the first necropolis of the state as a cultural
heritage and unit of information and memory. It addresses conceptual aspects about death
over the centuries, as well as its relationship in Art and Religion, the different ways of
dealing with this theme, including the academy. It presents the problem in the nineteenth
century, when the imperial ban on burials in churches and the construction of the first
cemeteries in Brazil. Emphasizes 19th century Alagoas, when the epidemics of cholera and
the Spanish flu (Influenza) were attributed by hygienist medicine to burials in churches. It
addresses the history of the N.S. necropolis. da Piedade, the cultural assets contained in
the tomb architecture, as well as the historical objects, the buried personalities of Alagoas,
in addition to the intangible heritage. This is a descriptive study with a documentary bias, a
qualitative approach and of a basic nature. It uses field, bibliographic and documentary
research as procedures, in addition to observation techniques and non-directive interviews.
