Within the context of Information Science, it is verified the existence of the information unit public library, which is characterized as a typological segment of specialty to the interest of this domain. The public library resonates in the amplitude of its social function as a cultural equipment conducive to the appropriation of information and, therefore, it must have its actions linked to society. In this scenario, the present research addresses fundamental presentations of concepts and historical aspects about the origins of the public library, bringing its relation with Information Science and Librarianship itself. Regarding the purpose, it points out the concepts related to the existing municipal public libraries in the state of Alagoas, showing different aspects related to their existence, maintenance and operation, such as: information on its creation, amount of collection, professional training of its agents, accessibility, among others. In the methodological scope, the research proposes to develop an exploratory study, focusing on the existing municipal public libraries in the state of Alagoas, going into aspects that represent this existence. In this perspective, it aims at evidencing, consequently, the particularities of the responding institutions in the survey. It also uses descriptive research as from surveys of data extracted from questionnaires, but also outlines itself as bibliographic and documental research for theoretical bases structured in literature review. Therefore, the quali-quantitative approach was chosen as the preponderant factor for the appreciation of the descriptive elements aiming at a theoretical contextualization of the specialized literature. Data collection took place by means of variables considered pertinent in the predominant understanding of the literature selected as a theoretical repertoire, and, for the survey, an analysis was performed from specific resources, namely: e-mails, websites, digital networks, among other means of contact considering the volume of answers. Verifying the analysis resulting from this study, it is possible to highlight that being Alagoas formed by 102 municipalities, the study on public libraries requires a continuous effort, because it is observed the lack under different aspects in the reality of these 37 public libraries analyzed through this study. And yet, the lack of a librarian professional in these institutions is a preponderant factor for the non-evolution of these spaces of social knowledge. Therefore, this study is not intended to exhaust the discussions, but to stimulate the interest of future research on the subject. It is possible to state that the public library represents a path of professional challenges, but also a social opportunity to expand the offer of knowledge to people. Therefore, it is understood that the public library implies in the constitutional dimension by the Magna Carta in force in Brazil, which ensures the right to information for the exercise of full citizenship. Finally, in respect for human diversity, the public library must assume a relevant role in contemporary society to foster culture, privileging spaces of interaction that reconcile dialogues for the records of knowledge and the notion of collective memory instituted locally.
