Actions against disinformation: an analysis of university libraries in the northeast region

Desinformation has generated harmful situations for society, as the distortions of information through manipulation and fraud act in a movement contrary to the right to quality information for the purposes of social processes aimed at the common good. The misservice generated by disinformation on important issues such as politics and public health has negative consequences for society, including putting the lives of many people at risk. With this, it is essential that efforts from various areas of knowledge are made in the fight against disinformation, and in this sense it is considered that university libraries have a relevant role for their reliability in terms of information organized and made available to serve society. The research has the problem of discussing the role of university libraries in the fight against disinformation. In this context, the general aim of the research is to analyze the policies and actions that are developed by university libraries in the fight against disinformation. It is based on the hypothesis that the university library, by fostering policies and proposing actions such as courses, lectures, programs and campaigns aimed at identifying fake news, plays a key role in combating disinformation, strengthening the collective understanding of the need for the dissemination and sharing of information to pass criteria of quality, truthfulness and provide a reliable source. The initiatives of university libraries of federal institutions in the Northeast region will be analyzed, seeking to identify and analyze policies and actions to combat disinformation. Thus, it is a research of exploratory, quantitative, documentary approach and which has as method a questionnaire as a tool for data collection with libraries managers. The results of this research are expected to provide an overview of how disinformation is being dealt with by the university libraries under review, providing a discussion of policies for tackling disinformation in relation to the role of libraries.
