Information visualization in open data dissemination environments: A Study on Industry Federations
Observatories in Brazil
Information Science; Information Visualization; Industry Observatories; Conceptual Model of
Information Visualization.
This research presents a study on information observatories belonging to the Industry Federations
of Brazil, which are responsible for providing significant and effective information for decision-making in the
industrial sector. The study aims to analyze the informational and organizational maturity of these
observatories and examine how they utilize concepts, techniques, and technologies in information
visualization to create interactive panels and disseminate information through dashboards. Therefore, this
dissertation has an exploratory and constructivist nature, employing a qualitative approach and utilizing
quantitative methods when necessary for in-depth analysis and hypothesis testing. The research is based on
bibliographic and documentary analysis, using materials available on the virtual platforms of the observatories
accessed during the specific observation process. The objects of analysis include the observatories of Industry
Federations present in seven Brazilian states (Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Paraná, Pernambuco,
and Santa Catarina). These observatories have consolidated information processes according to the adapted
conceptual model of information observatories proposed by Gomes et al. (2016), which serves as the basis for
the analysis and categorization in this study. The perceived results of this research include a significant
literature review on information observatories and the field of Information Visualization, as well as the
identification of best practices in information visualization techniques used by the Industry Federations'
information observatories. Additionally, a potential model for information visualization in virtual
environments of information observatories is presented.
