SUMMARY:

The initial years of elementary school are permeated (or should they be?) by a diversity of texts and carriers of texts constituted by “multi-modes” that need to be explored in their potentiality. Children's literature books are made up of these multimodes, that is, they bring with them a multiplicity of elements such as images and verbal texts in different typologies, which characterize them as multisemiotic. Understanding literacy and literacy as a process that involves many facets (SOARES, 2018), we see in books for children a potential to contribute to this multifaceted process of literacy/literacy, so that it is not just a carrier of verbal texts and visual, but it is a cultural product, with languages that need to be identified and understood in their entirety, without overvaluing one language over others, reading only a part of a whole (in general, the verbal text is read and the text visual is not read). Thus, we intend to carry out a documentary research, with a qualitative approach, with the general objective of analyzing the children's literature books intended for children in the literacy cycle, of the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático Pnaic (PNLD Pnaic). It is a collection of literary works selected through the Pedagogical Assessment process developed by the Secretariat of Basic Education in collaboration with the Federal University of Minas Gerais. And as specific objectives of this research, we seek: (1) Investigate the materiality of children's books in order to know and describe the parts that compose them; (2) examine the interrelationship of the languages that make up the books based on the study of Visual Design Grammar by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006); (3) analyze the potential of the works for the process of literacy and literacy of children. As a result, it is expected, from the identification and analysis of the multimodal elements that constitute them, to perceive in children's literature books a way to insert and consolidate literacy and literacy. It is certainly not the only way, but it is a procedure, a pedagogical resource that strongly supports the development of many learning rights (skills and competences provided for in the curriculum) of students in the early years of Elementary School.
