RESUMO:

The pulse-reserve paradigm proposes that the primary production in drylands would respond to rainfall in a rapid pulse of plant growth and stock of reserves. These plants are important reservoirs of microorganisms, like bacteria, filamentous fungi and yeasts. Microorganisms are essential agents for plant health, resilience, and reproductive success and its study is still neglected in dryland. Therefore, this study was proposed to evaluate the following hypotheses: i) In Caatinga dryland (Brazilian semiarid region) during the dry period, the yeasts from bromeliad leaves are shaped by the limitation of water and nutrients, decreasing its taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity. ii)
The diversity and abundance of the yeast community on leaves has a positive relationship with the rainfall being more immediate (recently). For such, six collections were carried out, sampling 90 leaves from 30 bromeliads. The collections were performed in a Brazilian semiarid region during dry and rainy seasons between 2020 and 2021. A richness of 50 yeast species was obtained, mostly from phylum Basidiomycota. There was no significant variation in the taxonomic, phylogenetic, or functional diversity between seasonal periods or among the collections. However, we observed an intense species turnover, more pronounced in the dry season. Species from the phylum Ascomycota tend to be overrepresented in the rainy season and Basidiomycota in the dry season. Some rainfall metrics, mainly those related to more recent rains, showed a positive and significant relationship with yeast richness and abundance, confirming our hypothesis partially. Given this, our results bring unprecedented insights into the dynamics of yeast in a tropical dryland and how it relates to rainfall and the pulse-reserve paradigm. In addition, with the understanding of the effect of rainfall on the microbiota, we can think in the future about how the microbial community of leaves will be affected by climate changes that may affect the cycles of rain and drought, thus also affecting the host plants.
