This dissertation analyzes the Congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil, from an ethnographic perspective situated within the field of Social Anthropology. It articulates missionary service, religious rites, memory, identity, and aging, understood as an institutional, social, and symbolic phenomenon. The study seeks to understand how consecrated religious life is lived, reinterpreted, and sustained in a context marked by the advanced aging of the nuns, the decrease in the entry of new vocations, and contemporary transformations in the social and religious fields. The methodological approach is based on ethnography, using
participant observation, systematic field diary entries, informal interviews, and the production of an ethnographic photographic archive. Fieldwork was conducted between 2024 and 2025, allowing for the building of relationships, observation of daily practices, and a situated understanding of rites, community organization, and care dynamics. The research was submitted to and approved by the Research Ethics Committee via Plataforma Brasil, ensuring the free and informed consent of the participants and the ethical use of visual records. The photographs are treated as ethnographic data and analytical tools, composing a visual narrative articulated with the text, in light of the contributions of Etienne Saimam (2012) and André Nunes (1998). From a theoretical point of view, the study engages with classic and contemporary authors in anthropology, mobilizing reflections on ritual, collective memory, identity, aging, and ethnography, such as Durkheim (1996), Minayo and Coimbra Jr. (2022), and Oliveira (1996), among others. The analysis shows that the aging of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus does not constitute a rupture of the mission, but rather a process of resignification of consecrated life, in which practices of mutual care, prayer, sharing of memories, and community presence assume centrality. The results of this research indicate that the aging of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, far from constituting a process of social erasure or an emptying of the mission, is a profoundly relational, symbolic, and collective experience. Through fieldwork, it was possible to understand that old age, in this context, is marked by daily practices of mutual care, prayer, sharing of memories, and community presence, which sustain the continuity of the charism and congregational identity. Aging thus reveals itself as a process of re-signifying the mission, in which gestures considered small (such as caring for the home, attentive listening, shared prayer, and the transmission of knowledge) assume centrality in religious life. By observing these practices, I was able to see that physical frailty does not imply a rupture with belonging or with the meaning of consecrated life; on the contrary, it becomes a privileged place for the production of meaning, reaffirmation of identity, and symbolic resistance against the productivist logics that marginalize old age. Thus, the dissertation demonstrates that, among the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, aging is affirmed as a constitutive dimension of social experience, missionary memory, and institutional continuity, revealing unique ways of experiencing time, finitude, and mission within community life.

Autism is typically viewed as a childhood condition, leading to a focus on childhood care from clinics, associations, philanthropic organizations, and even educational policies. However, there is a gap in understanding the experiences of autistic individuals who were not supported during childhood, going “unnoticed” until adulthood, and developing specific skills to “fit in” within social contexts: masking. This research seeks, through design, affection, and autistic, embodied, and intersectional lenses, to understand autism as experienced by autistic individuals who were diagnosed later in life. To this end, it investigates not only the world of autism – political activism, parental activism, and healthcare professional activity, which were investigated in three distinct events – but also evaluates the trajectories of seven adults exposed to or suspected of having autism, their masks, and strategies for navigating complex social situations before and after diagnosis. Based on methodological reflections, in which affect becomes the core of the research and design presents itself as its potentiator, it is noted that autism should not be seen as a merely cerebral condition, but as an embodied condition that, above all, influences and is influenced by the social context in which that body finds itself. Through an ethnographic study, we sought to understand masking as something socially and politically situated, exposing a trans autism and an autistic transgender identity. It was also possible to perceive the association of autism with impairments and deficits, such that autism was only credible in the context of crisis, difficulty, and self-harm. Thus, it is possible to consider that much is at stake in autism – from who accesses the diagnosis to who has access to therapies, treatments, and a greater voice in political struggles.

This research investigates the trajectories and professionalization processes of young B-boys and B-girls through an autoethnographic approach and comprehensive interviews that seek to recognize the body as a sensitive archive and producer of knowledge. It stems from the understanding of Hip Hop as a cultural, epistemological, and political movement whose formative strength emerges from practices of resistance, creation, and community reorganization. Methodologically, the investigation articulates the triad of seeing, hearing, and writing proposed by Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira, understanding that fieldwork, when crossed by the dancing body, demands an implicated and reflexive presence. Inspired by Bourdieu's critique of the "biographical illusion," the research recognizes that the trajectory in Breaking is marked by ruptures, disputes, and discontinuities that structure the youth experience in peripheral communities. Professionalization in Breaking is analyzed in light of the tensions discussed by Simões, especially regarding the negotiation between creativity, the market, and ideologies of authenticity. Finally, the study mobilizes other perspectives and hypothesizes that the practice of Breaking— even amid the diverse professional paths these youths may pursue—functions as a mode of re-existence, knowledge production, and community re-creation that updates peripheral memories and territorialities.

This dissertation examines the dynamics of quilombola labor mobility and its relationship with contemporary slavery in the quilombos of Baixio and Alto do Tamanduá, located in the hinterland of Alagoas, in the municipalities of Santana do Ipanema and Poço das Trincheiras. The study is based on the narratives and lived experiences of quilombola women who remain in the territory while their partners, children, and relatives migrate seasonally to work in agricultural harvests across different regions of Brazil. Drawing on these experiences, the research discusses how labor mobility, precarious working conditions, land insecurity, and the absence of public policies affect community and family life. Adopting an ethnographic approach, the study was developed through participant observation, discussion circles, life histories, and activities carried out within the framework of the Integrated Preventive Inspection of the São Francisco River Basin (FPI) and the Òmnira Freedom Project for Combating Contemporary Slave Labor. Throughout this process, the category 'widows of living husbands' emerged, a term used by the women themselves to express the effects of prolonged absences caused by seasonal migration. The dissertation is organized into chapters that address the historical and territorial formation of the quilombos, the routes of labor mobility, the relationship between migration and contemporary slavery, and the experiences of women who remain in the territory while assuming productive, domestic, and community responsibilities. Finally, it discusses the strategies of resistance and the demands of quilombola communities, demonstrating that labor mobility is directly linked to historical inequalities, structural racism, and the denial of territorial rights, while also highlighting the organizational capacity and resilience of quilombola women.

This work arises from questions built throughout my academic and personal journey, particularly from my experiences at the Xucurus Museum of History, Arts, and Customs, located in Palmeira dos Índios, Alagoas, Brazil. From this standpoint, I propose a critical analysis of how the museum constructs and reproduces representations of the Xukuru-Kariri Indigenous people, focusing on the ways these narratives are shaped by epistemic disputes and power relations. The study brings together concepts from anthropology, education,
and museology to problematize the historical role of museums as colonial and paternalistic institutions. It aims to discuss the need to indigenize museological structures by recognizing Indigenous peoples as active subjects and producers of knowledge. Furthermore, it explores the relationship between heritage education and Indigenous epistemologies, arguing that valuing ancestral knowledge within museums and schools can contribute to a critical intercultural education that challenges the hegemony of Eurocentric pedagogical models. The discussion highlights that it is not enough to simply decolonize, that is, to critically review the colonial legacies that sustain exclusions and silences; it is necessary to indigenize, meaning to reposition Indigenous peoples as central agents in the production and circulation of knowledge, memories, and aesthetics. Therefore, to indigenize museums means to acknowledge and incorporate other epistemologies, transforming these spaces into living territories of dialogue, resistance, and affirmation of citizenship.

The main objective of this master’s thesis is to analyze the collection of the Filhinhos da Mamãe carnival group, which is under the care of the Théo Brandão Museum of Anthropology and Folklore, located in the city of Maceió, in Alagoas, Brazil. The carnival group, founded in 1983, has a collection comprising objects from various sources and origins; the focus of this study is the giant doll that gives the group its name; objects used during Carnival, such as banners and costumes; and a collection of photographs. The aim is to reflect on the museum’s trajectory as a site for the production and management of local culture; to examine the relationship between the museum and the carnival group through its photographic collection; and to explore the different ways in which the group appropriates public space—particularly in the Jaraguá neighborhood—during Carnival. To achieve the proposed objectives, a qualitative ethnographic methodology was employed, based on participant observation within the museum’s collection, analysis of textual and visual documents, as well as primary and secondary semi-structured interviews. The conclusions point, first, to the importance of reflecting on anthropological and ethnographic research conducted within museum collections and using collections of museum objects. Second, they highlight the existence of different forms of appropriation of public space—especially in historic centers such as the Jaraguá neighborhood—by actors such as the “Filhinhos da Mamãe” carnival group.

This dissertation presents an audiovisual ethnography conducted with Maracatu Yá Dandara, a women’s percussion collective based in Maceió, Alagoas. The research, carried out by a member of the group since its founding in 2022, investigates internal dynamics, processes of belonging, networks of care, and the sensory experiences that shape the participation of the women in Yá. The methodological approach combines visual and sensory anthropology, integrating photographic and audiovisual records with embodied practices to understand how body, sound, territory, and memory operate as devices for producing knowledge. The study discusses culture, identity, gender, femininity, and raciality, situating maracatu in Alagoas within its historical context marked by the trauma of the 1912 Quebra de Xangô and the contemporary reinventions that enabled its resurgence. The ethnography highlights women’s protagonism in maracatu, analyzing how gender functions as a marker of distinction and how networks of solidarity and care are formed. The Yá Dandara Festival is examined as a space of collective autoethnography, racial literacy, and affirmation of ancestry, articulating cultural, political, and pedagogical practices. The research also explores teaching and learning through popular mastery, connecting formal and informal educational practices and discussing the state recognition of “popular” culture masters. Workshops held in peripheral territories, such as Vergel do Lago and Grota da Baixada do Antares, are analyzed as gestures of displacement, belonging, and community knowledge production. The analysis demonstrates that Yá Dandara operates as a collective that shapes, organizes, and transmits knowledge in situated, relational, and community-based ways, challenging epistemic hierarchies and expanding maracatu’s presence in the city. The conclusion emphasizes that the group contributes to the
reconfiguration of narratives about maracatu in Alagoas, strengthening Afro-Brazilian epistemologies and expanding the cultural historiography of the practice. Thus, the dissertation stands as a theoretical, methodological, and political contribution to studies on Afro-Brazilian cultural practices, gender, and audiovisual anthropology.

This dissertation investigates the production of urban space, social memory, and generational dynamics in Grota do Cigano, one of the most populous peripheries in Maceió. The central problem of this research lies in understanding how the everyday tactics and practices of residents produce meanings and territorialities that subvert the logic of exclusion and the stigma of dangerousness imposed by the “Maceió de For a” (Outer Maceió). Braking away from traditional anthropological distance, the work is grounded in Escrevivência, a concept formulated by Conceição Evaristo, but goes beyond, proposing an “escrevivência down the hillside”, operating here as a political positioning and the theoretical commitment of a researcher born in the “Grota”. The methodology is structured as a cartography of memories, where the ethnographic path assumes the purpose of taking the reader by the hand and leading them into a sensory and affective immension toward the bottom of the grotão, transforming the act of remembering into a labor of resistance against historical erasure. For Escrevivência to dialogue with the rigor of the Social Sciences, the analysis anchors itself in Lúcio Kowarick critique of urban spoliation, which evidences the material inequality expressed in housing precariousness; Michel Agier urban anthropology, which unveils “citymaking”through the sociabilities and everyday ingenuity of selfconstruction; and Alain Touraine sociology, whose category of Subject illuminates the agency capacity of residents and the generational ruptures of peripheral youth regarding access to higher education. The research findings demonstrate that the “Maceió de Dentro” is not a social vacuum or an urban fracture, but a living, existing, and escrevivente ground. The study concludes with the consolidation of an Antropology of the Grotas that takes the shin, the ground, and memories as its starting point, pointing toward future developments in the field of social museology through the urgente necessity of a Museum of the Peripheries of Maceió.

Located on the southern coast of Alagoas, the village of Poxim, in the municipality of Coruripe, is home to one of the state's oldest cultural manifestations: the Mané do Rosário cultural pageant (folguedo). Associated with the festive cycle of Saint Joseph and boasting approximately three hundred years of history, the pageant emerges from the historical experiences of the Black population during the period of slavery in Alagoas. The Mané do Rosário traces its origins back to the appearance of masked men during the celebrations honoring Saint Joseph, an episode that marks its beginning and remains one of the main symbolic references of the manifestation. Based on this historical trajectory, I investigated how the members of Mané do Rosário, through their practices, narratives, and performances, transmit knowledge across generations, update ancestral memories, and reaffirm Poxim as the place of origin and historical legitimacy of the pageant. The research was conducted using an ethnographic approach, through participant observation, interviews, and photographic records. The primary interlocutor was Mestra Traíra, the current leader of Mané do Rosário, whose role allowed for an understanding of the processes of continuity, knowledge transmission, and identity affirmation that run through this centuries-old manifestation.

Adicionalmente, o texto discute criticamente a construção do pensamento social alagoano, tensionando a visão folclorista e exotizante hegemônica na elite intelectual.

This dissertation describes and analyzes, from a processualist perspective, the knowledge tradition, ritual experiences, and political prisms that organize life in the Ilê Axé Ogum Metalofan Afogenin terreiro, in Maceió, Alagoas. This community rejects holistic approaches that historically decreed the disappearance or dilution of Afro-Alagoan practices following the Quebra de Xangô of 1912. Additionally, the text critically discusses the construction of Alagoan social thought, tensioning the hegemonic folkloric and exoticizing views held by the intellectual elite. The study demonstrates the indissociability between ritual experience and political confrontation in Alagoan Candomblé. In the public and institutional arena, these "terreiro politics" operate as a direct and continuous response to racism, acting as ways of rebalancing the cosmos and asserting social presence. The analysis details how this tradition guides experience, establishes, and chooses criteria of validation that confer legitimacy upon the ritual specialist to act upon the world—through the management of mystery and initiatory hierarchy—and agentiates the joint action between humans and deities in the maintenance of cosmic order. Thus, a confluence is observed between liturgical praxis and public action, in which terreiro politics represent the very extension of the spiritual mission of the terreiro's leadership. The actions of the priest and his egbé demonstrate that tradition is the primary force of rebalancing, creativity, and lineage legitimation, mobilized to affirm the space and sovereignty of the community in the present time.
