SUMMARY:

Information plays an important role in communication, decision-making and understanding the world. Recognized as a fundamental universal right, it promotes human development, civic participation and empowerment. This right is intrinsically linked to the guarantee of other human rights and plays a vital role in the fight against gender inequality, promoting a life free of violence and discrimination. To ensure effective access to information, it is imperative to develop information competence (COINFO), enabling people to search for, evaluate and use information critically and ethically. In the context of women in situations of violence, COINFO emerges as a powerful tool, enabling access to information about rights, available resources and ways to seek help. It is therefore essential to provide additional support and resources to ensure that all women have access to information and can make informed decisions for their safety and recovery. Violence against women is a significant public health challenge, impacting various social spheres both in Brazil and globally. Although public health does not deal exclusively with individual cases, violence against women is recognized internationally as a central concern. Promoting knowledge through information empowers women, allowing them to gain control over their lives, make decisions and achieve autonomy in the fight against violence.
