SUMMARY:

This doctoral thesis addresses the structural bases that made conservatism a tradition of thought and the advancement of this trend in Brazilian social work, starting from the historical and social foundations that provided its genesis and replacement in society and within the profession. Given the central axis of the research's concern, the objective of the study is to understand the social and economic relations that provided the basis for the constitution of conservatism and its process of insertion in the ideological and cultural aspects of the reproduction of class society, impacting a conservative offensive in social work that intensifies given the recent political and ideological scenario in Brazil in recent years. The bibliographic review was the methodology used in the research process, based on Marx's method from a historical, critical and dialectical analysis, taking as a methodological resource the immanent analysis of the texts used. Conservatism originated from the writings of Edmund Burke, resulting from his moral criticism of the French uprising of the 18th century and its progressive proposals, because they threatened the social structure and traditional institutions of the time. The presence of irrationalism in Burke's writings stands out, where Lukács criticizes the reactionary character of the philosophy that this author defends, considering his visible position in the face of the class struggle, also generating the lowering of philosophy and marking its opposition and refusal of materialism, making it an ideological framework to sustain bourgeois domination. This debate required an analysis of the process of capitalism structuring and consolidating, highlighting its mechanisms of order preservation, namely: the expropriation of work, colonization, the State and crises as faces of the reproduction of capital. The research also presents the analysis of the conservative ideological substrate in Brazil, for which it was fundamental to understand the process of the country's socio-historical formation as a privileged locus for the structuring of conservative thinking in the country and for the constitution of its dominant moral values. It brings a historical review of the genesis of Latin American and Brazilian social work and the restructuring movements of the profession, such as Reconceptualization and Renewal, and the main theoretical influences that influenced these movements, highlighting the historical expressions of conservatism throughout the evolution of the profession. It ends with an analysis of the expressions of conservatism in Brazilian contemporaneity, considering the political, ideological and class struggle setbacks that the configuration of contemporary conservatism and the postmodern offensive, due to its resistance to dialectical reason, have caused to society and to the social work, which is pressured to deepen its studies on the Marx’s work in order to respond critically to this conservative wave. The assumption of this research is that the advance of conservatism in Brazil maintains an intrinsic relationship with the power structures established in the country, during its socio-historical formation process, and which last until the present time, perpetuating social and material relations that condition the reproduction of the capitalist order. By analyzing the structural bases that found modern conservatism and the strategies plot of capitalism that make its replacement possible, this thesis shows that the advance of conservatism in social work, as a historically determined profession, points to the weakening of the theoretical-critical debate within, reflecting on the presentation of post-modern trends that will cause inflections in its ideological and political spheres, since it affects professional training and brings implications for the implementation of its professional project of an ethical and political nature.
