SUMMARY:

This thesis deals with the central historical and theoretical foundations that constitute the problem of the “agrarian question” in capitalism in general and in Brazilian capitalism in particular. This study aims, in particular, to understand the central determinations of the Brazilian agrarian issue that imply the historical struggle of rural workers for and on the land. To do so, we departed from a materialist conception of history that substantiated an investigative process of a bibliographic nature, whose preliminary results are exposed in two main “moments”. The first consists of a theoretical-historical exposition, of an exploratory nature, on the historical character of land ownership, focusing on the processes of peasant expropriation and the constitution of modern private land ownership in the context of societal transition from feudalism to capitalism. The centrality of land in the constitution of the social being is discussed, its meaning as an “object” and “universal means of human work”, considering the dialectic relationship between property-appropriation-expropriation, as well as the main historical forms of land ownership in the social development according to Marxian thought. Thus, we seek to apprehend the historical factors that originally influenced the constitution of the modern form of land ownership, considered as a material presupposition of the capitalist production process in general and an indispensable element for the accumulation of capital in the countryside, the target of antagonistic social interests. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the theoretical foundations of the specificity of land ownership under capitalist relations of production, in which the private appropriation of land is intended for eminently mercantile agricultural production under the command of capital and assumes a radically new and contradictory: the land-commodity. Thus, an examination of the theoretical analysis of Marx in The Capital (2013) and Kautsky in The Agrarian Question (1968) regarding the economic determinations of land-commodity under the theory of value is carried out. In this section, we sought to understand how land, an element of nature that does not result from work, becomes a commodity and that has in the Marxian theory of land rent (MARX, 2017a) a milestone in the unveiling of the historical specificities of land ownership in capitalism. This aspect is understood as a central foundation of the agrarian question in capitalism in general and, therefore, a starting point for the analysis of social contradictions in and from the countryside. The last moment of the research, in preparation, intends to address the constitution of private land ownership in Brazil, considering the particularities of the process of formation of sui generis Brazilian capitalism that are linked to the past of the colonial invasion and the slow constitution of production relations typically capitalists (through “free” labor and “captive” land) – a contradictory process marked by ties of economic subordination to the external interests of central capitalist countries. It is intended that this theoretical-analytical course allows us to apprehend the fundamentals of the agrarian question in the Brazilian reality and the challenges that are imposed on those who, more out of necessity than by spontaneous will, dare to face capitalist land ownership.
