SUMMARY:

Speech perception is regulated not only by the functional principles of the auditory system, but also by models of speech in long-term memory. Classification into a phoneme category is based on a mental representation that contains information about ideal features and attributes of that phoneme. This approach holds that members of a given phonological category are discriminable in terms of quality as a category level, that is, some phonemes are perceived as better examples than others. Among the important auditory skills for the child to be able to recognize and understand speech are detection and discrimination. Difficulties in these skills can cause speech and/or language disorders. The Cortical Auditory Evoked Potential test is used to characterize the neural detection and/or discrimination of sounds from different stimuli. However, speech stimuli that are used to investigate auditory detection and discrimination do not analyze similarities and differences between the phonemes used. In the search for a more complete assessment that analyzes these two skills more deeply, this research was divided into three stages: 1) definition of speech stimuli considering the degree of distortion between them and creation of a new collection protocol. 2) Examination of cortical auditory evoked potentials in adults and children with typical hearing and speech, with the aim of developing a diagnostic test to identify the levels of detection and auditory discrimination. Initially, the preliminary results of the pilot tests showed that the stimuli were capable of generating cortical auditory evoked potentials, making it possible to identify the P1-N1-P2-N2 complex in adults. The analysis of these initial data showed that the use of the pair of syllables /BADI/ presented more robust waves than the pair /BADA/. Thus, a new pilot test was carried out with six levels of distortion between the syllables /BADI/ to choose which levels will be studied. 3) In parallel, software was developed with the aim of performing the averaging of the stimuli studied in free field, using a speaker in an acoustic booth. Finally, a systematic review of long latency auditory potentials in individuals who stutter is in progress.
