SUMMARY:

Here we present a research proposal with the broad purpose of discussing referrals related to the recent approval of Law 13,935/2019, which establishes the formation of a multidisciplinary team, which includes social workers and psychologists, to work in the basic teaching and learning network. We highlight that this approval is the result of many years of struggle and demands by this class of workers, through their representative entities. The specific focus of this proposal will be the inclusion of psychologists in this team. As a justification for this focus, we rescued discussions about the Psychology services provided in schools, which are historically recognized as the field in which Psychology practices began. That is, professional work in Psychology began within schools. However, there is a lot of instability in the history of School Psychology, regarding the definition of guiding parameters for professional actions in this field. We currently highlight a collective effort by psychologists who work in schools, in order to review hegemonic guidelines for action in this field, inherited from a phase in history, when Psychology was legally recognized as a science and profession, with the function, at that time, of deal with people's mental health. We argue that human societies have experienced many transformations over time, which are reflected in the need to update guiding principles of science and professional practices. We apply this reflection to work in the field of School Psychology and draw attention to the urgencies and demands caused by the approval of the law, which raises expectations regarding the hiring of Psychology professionals to join the multidisciplinary team that the law establishes. Our research question is, what is the most appropriate profile of the Psychology professional to fill the vacancies that will be opened because of the referrals to comply with this law? We accuse here, a concern that is perpetuated in schools, the exercise of a Psychology that is uncommitted to sociocultural aspects of educational processes, which refer to issues within the scope of politics, ethics, and human development. The reason for this concern are problems and gaps in the general training of psychologists who, under the strong influence of a heritage, predominantly assume mental health as the focus of professional activity, regardless of the institutional field in which their actions are targeted. We therefore propose a intervention-type research. That is a continuing training course for psychologists. The general objective of the course and research is to prepare psychologists to join the multidisciplinary team established by LAW 13,935/2019. As specific objectives we plan to: a) promote procedures and discursive spaces that enable psychologists to discriminate foundations and guidelines of traditional practices and current perspectives of School Psychology; b) discuss the focus on the relationship between communication and human development within the scope of Critical School Psychology actions; c) evaluate a methodology to prepare psychologists to work in educational settings, from a critical perspective. The course will consist of five workshops. Through the workshops we will simulate situations involving three problems that we consider incidents in schools: 1) conflict between managers and teachers at a school; 2) student with an anxiety crisis at school; 3) everyday problem with accessibility for people with disabilities. We plan to use some methodological strategies to encourage participants to express how they could work with School Psychology in the three simulated situations (workshops one, two and three respectively). We also plan activities that encourage the integration of discussions about simulated situations with literature focused on critical approaches to School Psychology and the presentation of work proposals with school psychology from a critical perspective by participants, in the format of seminars (workshops four and five, respectively). In the workshops, we will use various methodological resources such as written narratives, videos, and scientific articles.
