SUMMARY:

The text and research are supported by an approach that does not separate the political from the personal. A central concept in this research is that of afro-esteem, a term that has been used by black people on social networks, as a means of empowerment resulting from racial literacy to (re)affirm the love for Afro-Brazilian culture and the phenotypic characteristics of the community. black. Although the concept/term has emerged recently, Afro-esteem is first and foremost a practice, and as such, it is not new. The Black Movement in Brazil has been talking for a long time about the love and affection with which we, Black people, we must relate to our own bodies. My proposal in this research is that, in the case of black people, self-esteem and afro-esteem are interconnected, because, taking into account Brazilian structural racism that generates self-hatred in these people, to develop love for themselves and self-esteem, the black population needs first (re)define what it means to be black, producing other meanings and meanings for this body that was historically produced to occupy the margin. The general objective of the research is to discuss the practice of afro-esteem in the lives of black people, for this I assume some specific objectives: i) to present the bases and foundations of afro-esteem from the history of the Brazilian Black Movement and ii) to know how black people experience Afro-esteem. As an epistemological basis, I will start from the epistemologies of the global south. To achieve the proposed objectives, I will use three methodological tools: i) carry out Afro-affective conversations with black people, ii) carry out an intersectional analysis to analyze the content produced through Afro-affective conversations, and iii) carry out a narrative review to present the bases and foundations of Afro-esteem in the history of the Brazilian Black Movement. The relevance of the research lies, among many points, in contributing to the construction of knowledge in psychology aimed at overcoming racism and whiteness as a model of bodies and life, considering the way in which Brazilian racial structures interfere in the construction of Afro-esteem , self-esteem, experiences and subjectivity of black people.
