SUMMARY:

The COVID-19 pandemic boosted the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the professional practices of psychologists, with psychotherapy being one of the activities in which the use of such technologies was most evident. The incorporation and increasing use of technologies in professional performance revives discussions regarding the ethical, technical and training implications of psychological practices mediated by ICTs, among many other issues. This is qualitative research, whose theoretical-methodological framework is aligned with Social Constructionism and Discursive Practices and Production of Meaning. The objective is to understand the meanings produced in the professional practices of psychologists mediated by ICTs. Semi-structured interviews were carried out via Google Meet with 5 (five) psychologists who: a) provided services through ICTs before the pandemic; b) who started to provide services through ICTs due to the pandemic. The interviews were recorded with consent and transcribed to facilitate information analysis. As an analysis strategy, Dialogical Maps were produced, as they help to identify themes discussed in the interviews. The maps identified five sets of meanings involved in professional practices mediated by technologies: training, ways of doing things, networks, security and in-person vs. online contrasts. If, on the one hand, the diversity of ways of doing things expands possibilities, on the other hand, ubiquity and the absence of borders can be a worrying factor in the relationship with work. Thinking about the interface between practices and technologies goes beyond issues that individualize or are strictly focused on the “effectiveness” of the process, it involves theoretical, technical, occupational, social and emotional issues that are directly crossed by technology. The different uses and their effects invite us to increasingly reflect on the direction our practices are taking with increasing technological advancement, especially how to add machines without dispensing with what makes us human.
