SUMMARY:

We present here a case study of an adult who underwent a cochlear implant, but who resisted hearing rehabilitation. In this research, we discuss the relationship between language and culture to defend that people with deafness have different cultural experiences from hearing people. Based on Cultural Psychology, we define culture as semiotic mediation and recognize that it is constituted by human thought and development. The aim of this research was to investigate how a person with deafness, who had a cochlear implant, experiences the transition from deaf to hearing culture. With regard to the methodological design, we work with narrative analysis. We analyzed narratives of people with deafness accessed on the YouTube platform and narratives produced from episodic interviews mediated by a LIBRAS interpreter, with a 20-year-old adult who had a cochlear implant at 13 years of age. We support the analysis in discussions about the role of narrative time, the characteristics of enunciation and the functioning of voices for the production of meanings. In the results, we highlight two aspects in the transition from deaf to hearing culture: 1) specificities in the construction of the sense of temporality in the narratives of a person with deafness justifies the recognition of a distinct culture and 2) the continuous dialogue of voices, fostered a conflict / tension based on the experience that confronted possible “benefits” of being a listener with the ample suffering, pain and discomfort caused by the listening promoted by the CI. In conclusion, we point out the need for professional qualification to work in the complex process that we call transition from deaf to hearing culture. We emphasize that rehabilitation is not just about the experience with sounds, but, above all, about the transformations in the way other people, institutions, the world are experienced.
