THE INTENTION OF USING THE TINDER APPLICATION: A STUDY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE THEORY OF PLANNED ACTION

SUMMARY:

This study aimed to analyze the behavioral intention of users to use Tinder, based on the Theory of Planned Action (TAP). The dissertation is composed of two chapters. The first chapter underlies the discussion of the Tinder encounter app. It consists of a systematic literature review carried out in six databases, with the descriptors “social” AND “encounter” AND “Tinder” AND “relationship” and “social” AND “dating” AND TINDER. After the selection of articles (N:59), the introductions and conclusions were cut, as well as their organization in two textual corpuses, submitted to analysis by the Iramuteq software. The results elucidated by corpus 1,
demonstrated theoretical and objective aspects related to the application, pointing to casual sex as the main consequences of use, together with narcissistic personality characteristics. The findings from the analysis of corpus 2 brought up the discussion about the importance of further studies on user motivation. The app was identified as an elicitor of anxiety, associated with narcissistic behaviors. The second study aimed to analyze the beliefs of Tinder application users about the behavioral intention to use it, based on the Planned Action Theory (TAP). For this, a qualitative research was carried out, obtaining 62 responses from users through an online form, with non-probabilistic sampling. Data were organized with the help of Iramuteq, and submitted to lexical analyzes of similarity and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The main findings identified that behavioral beliefs were linked to attitudes such as meeting new people without leaving the house, exchange of affection, sex and approval. Normative beliefs, on the other hand, brought friends and colleagues as facilitators of use, family and colleagues and work as people who would disapprove. Control beliefs reveal that the application is practical, allows filters according to personal interest, facilitates the formation of friendships and maintains contact with other people outside of your social environment.
