SUMMARY:

The present study aims to investigate what remains of the Brazilian military dictatorship. The end of the dictatorship was marked by an Amnesty Bill that made it impossible to carry out a legal investigation and create spaces for victims to talk about what they lived and suffered. We start from the hypothesis that this impossibility had consequences for the way the country was organized after the dictatorship, in such a way that part of society denies the abuses committed by the regime and asks for its return. Unlike what happened here, post-war Germany carried out a legal transition that was marked by the condemnation of several agents of the Nazi command and enabled the surviving victims not only to receive financial compensation, but also spaces for memory and speech. Still, there are denials about what happened during the Nazi regime and a desire to forget about the facts. With or without legal transition, something remains. Thus, we use the testimony to seek to locate this remnant in the military dictatorship in Brazil. The testimony of Flávio Tavares, in the book Memórias do Esquecimento, will be utilized as a basis for a better understanding of the dictatorship and for a discussion about what is left of it.
