SUMMARY:

Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics-IBGE (2019) point out that 2.3 million Brazilians aged two years or more have great difficulty or cannot hear at all. In the research proposed here, we turned to questions related to the human development of people with deafness, considering the specificities of their insertion in language. The specificities that we will focus on result from the appropriation of children with deafness of a language different from their parents, as is the case of LIBRAS. We base our proposition on assumptions from Cultural Psychology, highlighting discussions about the communicative function of language and the central role it plays in the organization of human psychological processes. The objective of the research we propose is to investigate communicative processes emerging from stories told by hearing mothers who are not fluent in LIBRAS, about their relationship with a deaf child. In our methodological design, we plan the construction of autobiographical narratives, as a theoretical and methodological instrument of Cultural Psychology that enables the analysis of meanings historically constructed by narrators. Four hearing mothers who are not fluent in LIBRAS, who have a deaf child being treated at a Training Center for Education and Care Professionals for People with Deafness - CAS, will participate in the research. To encourage autobiographical narratives, six episodic interviews will be carried out individually, to focus on past, current and future experiences of the communicative relationship of the participating mothers with their deaf child. Our expectation is to be able to characterize the communicative relationship between mother and child with deafness in the absence of LIBRAS and, based on this characterization, make notes on the impact of this lack on the psychosocial development of the person with deafness.
