SUMMARY:

The focus of this paper is to understand the meanings of land and territoriality among the Jiripankó indigenous people, who live in a semi-arid region of the state of Alagoas (known as "sertão"), Northeast of Brazil. The Jiripankó have an estimated population of 1,757 inhabitants (SIASI/SESAI, 2014) and occupy an area of 215 hectares, delimited in 1992. There are 10 villages, only 03 of which are within the delimited area. All other areas are occupied by Jiripankó family groups and non-indigenous invaders who claim ownership of those lands. The Jiripankó come from Pankararu family groups that, in the mid-19th century, moved from a region known as “Brejo dos Padres”, in the state of Pernambuco, and settled in an area of approximately 2,100 hectares in the state of Alagoas. Since that period, the lands of the Jeripankó have suffered constant invasions by ranchers who raise cattle, sheep and goats.. In this context, the Jiripankó live in permanent territorial conflicts and spatial confinement and, for decades, have been fighting for the expansion and approval of their original territory. The focus of this research is the attempt to understand the uses and meanings of land and territory, the forms of socio-spatial organization of the population and the relationships between territorial spaces and Jiripankó socio-cosmology.
