SUMMARY:

The Perseverança Collection comprises more than 200 sacred objects stolen from Afro-Brazilian cults, in
the Alagoas State, in the violent episode of religious persecution known as Quebra de Xangô, whick took
place in Maceió and surrounding areas in 1912. Exactly a century later, a request was formalized for its
listing at the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Instituto (Brazil). The present dissertation results
from tha proposal to ethnograph this process of recognition of the Perseverança Collection as Cultural
Hegitage of Brazil. Mobilizing the notion of cultural reference, the general objective is to apprehend and
qualify the mechanisms of mediation and interlocution between the tipping instruction and peoples from
Afro-Brazilian cults in Alagoas. The specific objectives include: 1) apprehending and characterizing the
mobilizations of Afro-Brazilian cults peoples in Alagoas in general and specifically in relation to the
Quebra de Xangô of 1912 and the Perseverança Collection; 2) follow the trajectory of Perseverança as a
museum collection and qualify the narratives produced around its exhibition modes; 3) to apprehend and
problematize the dialogue mechanisms put into practice in the patrimonialization’s instruction of the
Perseverança Collection. As a methodological strategy for ethnographic pratice, I intersperse
documentary and bibliographical research to qualify the narratives produced along the trajectory of the
pieces and field actions such as comprehensive interviews and participation in social mobilizations aimed
at apprehending the agencies of interlocutors in the recognition process. In broad terms, based on the
patrimonialization of the Perseverança Collection in Alagoas, I aim to discuss the interface of Brazilian
heritage policy with groups/communities in processes of recognition of their cultural references as
Cultural Heritage of Brazi.
