SUMMARY:

The conservation of springs in semiarid environments is extremely important for human, animal and environmental needs, and is also fundamental for the development of socioeconomic activities in the region, since semiarid areas have low rainfall conditions and an intense water deficit for most of the year. The caatinga in the northeast, in addition to its environmental characteristics and qualities, has social and environmental actions that operate directly in changing the conservation status of springs. The sources of the municipality Olho D'Água do Casado are inserted in these circumstances, where the low water index related to the environmental situation of the place and the anthropic actions have been causing problems of environmental degradation. Faced with these questions, the general objective of the research was to carry out a study aiming at an assessment of the conservation status of the springs. The method that conducted the study was experimental, with a quantitative and qualitative approach. Bibliographic and documentary studies were carried out, water collections were carried out to analyze the physical parameters: Total Dissolved Solids (mg/L), Electrical Conductivity (µS/cm), Turbidity (NTU) and Temperature (°C), chemical: Hydrogenic Potential (pH) ), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (mg/L), Dissolved Oxygen (mg/L), Total Phosphorus (mg/L), Total Nitrogen (mg/L) and biological: Thermotolerant Coliforms (NMT) in the laboratory, with collection in the the month of December 2020 referring to the dry period and the month of May 2021 referring to the rainy period. Sediments were collected for particle size analysis in October 2020, identification of springs and watercourses and geological mapping and land use, characterization for perpetuity and the development of an educational booklet aimed at improving the relationship between society and nature. The partial result showed that the sources analyzed presented a perenniality during the years researched, with the physical, chemical and biological parameters through the seasonality of the dry period, showing values practically above the limit established by the government agencies. The sources are geologically inserted in the Tacaratu formation, with a sedimentological study of two springs in different areas, indicating a higher percentage of sand and its morphoscopy with angular and sub-rounded grains, with a sphericity between medium and low and a matte texture. Urban springs have a degraded state of conservation, while rural ones show a disturbed conservation. It appears that the methodology used in this research proves to be effective for the study of the conservation analysis of springs in the semiarid region, showing that the most damaged springs were NU1 and NR6, due to deforestation, the presence of animals, the a greater amount of organic matter and silting.
