SUMMARY:

Mining is one of the most important economic activities for the country, which despite being part of the primary sector contributes significantly to the country's economy, being responsible for producing a series of inputs, present in our daily lives, especially those mined from aggregates for Civil construction. Despite all its already recognized importance, including for the country's development, it is one of the economic activities that most impact and change landscapes. In addition, it is characteristic of mining aggregates for civil construction to install themselves close to urban areas because, due to the low unit value that aggregates have, it ends up forcing this type of mining enterprise to install themselves close to their consumer centers, that is, close to the cities, as the demand for construction materials comes from them. However, this relationship results in environmental and territorial impasses, since it is an activity that generates impacts that go beyond its exploration area, such as earthquakes generated through the denotation of rocks, which end up impacting the neighboring community, generating disturbances and even , structural damage to buildings due to their extraction methods, as well as the proximity to urban centers that are still undergoing the urbanization process, with the growth of cities, which become a controversial factor because, despite the mining companies that produce aggregates for the civil construction sector, depending on urbanization to exist, through the process of disorganized expansion of the territory, end up becoming victims of urban expansion because they are “suffocated” by constructions that are closer and closer to the area of operation. In this sense, this work aims to analyze this relationship from a case study with the aggregates mining company IMCREL, which has more than 40 years of operation, producing inputs such as crushed rock and stone dust for the civil construction sector from fragmentation of the Gneiss. IMCREL is located in the rural area of the municipality of Rio Largo, Alagoas, close to the municipal limit and the urban area of Messias, Alagoas, which has been showing an urban expansion in a convergent direction with the mining company, thus revealing the need for environmental and territorial planning in order to avoid conflicts.
