SPATIAL ORGANIZATION AND SPATIALIZATION OF SOCIAL
MOVEMENTS IN STRUGGLE FOR LAND: A STUDY ON THE IMMEDIATE
GEOGRAPHIC REGION OF DELMIRO GOUVEIA – ALAGOAS
Spatial organization, Social movement, Peasant, Space.
Understanding the spatial organization and spatialization of social movements fighting
for land in the Immediate Geographical Region of Delmiro Gouveia is fundamental to
unveil the social, political and economic relations in this space clipping from the
regionalization presented by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE
delivered in 2017. The area of the Immediate Geographical Region of Delmiro
Gouveia/AL is marked by the high concentration of land that is a reflection of the
Brazilian Agrarian Question. Social movements play a fundamental role in confronting
the composition of rural space, as they are also spatialized through social struggle and
organization, as Porto-Gonçalves (2020, p.27) describes: “every social movement
carries, to some degree, a new order which, as such, presupposes new positions, new
relations, always socially instituted, between places”. Thus, having the Landless Rural
Workers Movement (MST) as a reference, we seek to analyze the spatial organization of
the Immediate Geographic Region of Delmiro Gouveia - Alagoas, from the
spatialization of social movements fighting for land as contradictory forces and
organizers of space.
