SUMMARY:

Tourism has become one of the most important economic activities in the contemporary world, with the most varied implications for places that become tourist destinations. For example, tourism causes economic, social, cultural, political and environmental impacts, both negative and positive. These types of impacts have the power to reverberate in local society, bringing benefits and problems to the community. A relevant aspect, which deserves the attention of the academy, is that tourism has not received due attention in relation to the many consequences it brings to the territories of places that are touristicised. These consequences, which can be many, have the potential to reorganize territories according to the interests of the agents involved. There are at least three groups of forces that influence and shape tourist destinations. There are, on the one hand, tourists, who are, in general, the primary driving force in the creation of destinations. On the other hand, there is the public power, which, once choosing tourism as an alternative for development, creates public policies that seek to direct how the destination will develop over time. In addition, there are market agents, who are responsible for offering services and attractions that will be made available to visitors. In order to know how a destination is spatialized and creates its own territories, it is necessary to examine how each set of touristification forces acts. The main objective of this study is to understand how tourism is spatialized in the Maceió destination, particularly based on market action and tourist behavior. The research is qualitative and exploratory, and uses as strategies for data collection the examination of documents related to market agents linked to tourism, surveys on internet sites, photographic records, open interviews and the application of questionnaires. It is expected that the results to be obtained by this dissertation will contribute to a better understanding of the tourist territorialization of the Maceió destination and that the knowledge generated will be useful for the purposes of formulating public policies.
