SUMMARY:

After the heavy summer rains in 2018 that hit the city of Maceió, several residents of the Pinheiro neighborhood reported the appearance of cracks, fissures and soil sinking in buildings and public roads. After these events, the Geological Survey of Brazil, based on studies in the area, found that the subsidence process was taking place continuously and that mining was the main factor responsible for triggering this process. The subsidence, which was initially restricted to the neighborhood of Pinheiro, extended to the neighborhoods of Bom Parto, Mutange, Bebedouro and Farol, located in a central area of the city of Maceió. It is estimated, according to various sources, that around sixty thousand residents were directly affected and had to leave their homes after the imminent socio-environmental tragedy. After Braskem's confirmation of guilt, an agreement was signed between the MPF, MPE and mining company. Among the main actions that were agreed upon, two stand out: the interruption of extractive activities and the relocation of affected residents. In view of the questions presented, the main objective of this research was to analyze the process of forced migration of the residents affected, to evaluate the socio-environmental opinion of the population directly and indirectly affected and to examine the territorial redistribution of the former residents in the period that corresponds from 2018 to 2023.
