BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Geografia
SUMMARY:

Health-related issues have had a direct relationship with the spatial distribution of environmental and social determinants since the dawn of civilizations. Nowadays, the importance of health in social dynamics and the shaping and territorial autonomy of healthcare facilities is increasingly recognized. As an investigative focus, the analysis started with the geography of healthcare services in Maceió: their scope and limitations. In this context, the aim was to investigate how healthcare services are organized and distributed in Maceió, considering their coverage and limitations. To do so, relevant studies related to this topic were searched on the SciELO and Scopus platforms, and articles and books published in Portuguese, English, French, Spanish, and German within the last five years and available in full were selected, providing a diversified view of Medical Geography and health in different contexts and realities. Health is a state of balance between physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of illnesses. It is understood that actions to maintain a healthy and balanced environment also stem from the territory, as individuals are influenced by the spaces they inhabit and, at the same time, influence them. Concerning the human body, it should be understood as not only anatomophysiological but also social. Thus, Health Geography proves useful in studying human conditions and health indicators in specific times and places. Through the analysis of variables and indicators, it offers an explanation for health-disease processes. The ability and expertise of geography in promoting a continuous debate about anthropic actions in the territory, combined with a critical perspective to observe, infer, and engage with reality, are essential components for explaining the health-disease process and understanding access to health and the facilities that promote it, as well as comprehending the territory.
