SUMMARY:

Urbanization re-signified the city as a locus of human concentration,
production and service provision. Linked to this, the increase in
consumption at the end of the 20th century boosted the inappropriate
disposal of urban solid waste. The collection and commercialization of this
recyclable waste was presented as a viable work activity, mainly for the
poor population, precarious or excluded from the labor market, even if it is
loaded with negative social valuation. We understand the phenomenon of
collection and recycling, through the analysis of the circuits of the urban
economy, manifested in the daily life of these peripheral social subjects
within the capitalist logic of “the unequal”. In a society where
commodification reaches all dimensions, it is feasible for Capital to
institutionalize a productive chain backed by the expropriated work of
collectors and the use of garbage as an input. In Maceió, we will address
CoopMundaú, a self-managed organization made up of collectors of
recyclable materials, active since 2020 in selective collection in the
neighborhoods of Vergel, Ponta Grossa and Trapiche da Barra. His work,
in addition to making it possible to support several vulnerable families,
translates the proposal to rebalance the environmentally correct
destination of urban waste, reclassifying it into potentially marketable
materials in the recycling chain, mitigating the volume of disposal in
landfills and consequently reducing the public budget expenditures.
Realize that the work carried out by CoopMundaú, although not decently
paid, contributes directly to urban public cleaning. We follow a
geographical approach that not only characterizes the operation and
participation of CoopMundaú in the recycling network of Maceió and in the
consequent urban scenario of collection, but also other conformations: the
relationships involved in the work of the collectors and the other agents;
the territorial characterization of selective collection activities; and the
scope of state public policies in exercise by the municipality. Using the application of questionnaires/interviews (scavengers/cooperators, intermediary buyers) and GPS software to record the coordinates of the area of operation of CoopMundaú on the geographic map of the municipality. We will unite the results of our efforts to research and work on the same topic, praising the role of collectors, given that they are the most active agents in the recycling production chain, focusing on the multiple dimensions evidenced in the practice of their work, socioeconomic aspects of environmental appeal, despite experiencing situations of indifference on the part of the government.
