The Brazilian semiarid region has historically faced an excessive exploitation of natural resources.Given the background, besides the predatory activities exerted on the fragile geo-environmental framework of this region, the unbridled exploitation of natural resources can lead to a future process of desertification.Desertification can be described as the ineffectiveness of lands in arid, semiarid, and dry subhumid areas, which are affected by various factors such as, climate variations and anthropogenic activities.Collectively, these pressures have a negative impact on the environmental domains, as well as in the populations living within these areas. The semiarid region of Alagoas, due to its significant human pressures and its geographical location, which are in areas with extreme climatic conditions, is, therefore, a region prone to experiencing desertification processes. Here we investigate how the levels of susceptibility to desertification are correlated with geo-environmental indicators, such as soil type, topography, rainfall, and land use in semiarid region of Alagoas. We propose multiple methodological procedures including: (i) literature review; (ii) documentary research; (iii) development and analysis of cartographic documents; (iv) remote sensing and geoprocessing techniques; and (v) on-site analysis of areas indicating potential desertification processes.The analysis of susceptibility to desertification will be conducted through the integration of geo-environmental indicators, such as soil type, topography, rainfall, and land use, by correlating anthropogenic influences with the support of geotechnologies in a multicriteria analysis.Jointly,these indicators support the integrated analysis, facilitating the development of mapping of susceptibility to desertification processes, aiming at the geo-environmental planning of the studied municipalities.The preliminary results, such as the historical survey of semiarid region of the Alagoas state occupation, the average rainfall measurement from 1962 to 2022, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), topography, land use, along with the field surveys, indicates that some areas are already undergoing the process of susceptibility to desertification. Our study also aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of the applied methodology, as well as generate a comprehensive map of areas susceptible to desertification.
