SUMMARY:

The concept of "smart cities" (SC) has become very popular as an alternative city model that seeks to improve the quality of life in urban centers based on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) tools. It is a concept that is still under construction, bringing the challenge to public managers in adapting traditional cities to new technologies. The objective of the research was to analyze the concepts of Smart Cities, and their application in Maceió, presenting as a final product the project of a "Fab Lab", which is a digital fabrication laboratory that encourages the creation of new products, intellectual property and business in the area of technology. In methodological terms, the work was developed using a qualitative, bibliographic and documental research; based on the survey of national and international experiences, and with the elaboration of a local diagnosis, the project proposal for the theme under study was elaborated. With the project proposal, this research aims to contribute to the promotion of more democratic access of people to information and communication technologies, an essential condition for the development and implementation of smart cities.
