Gamified Open Learner Models in Inteligent Tutoring Systems


RESUMO:

Researchers are increasingly interested in the use of Open Learner Models (OLM) to enhance metacognition and self-regulation for Intelligent Tutoring Systems students. By using OLM approaches, students can better understand their learning process and develop activities more consciously and independently. However, the AIED community still lacks a current understanding of how OLM is used in ITS. In this paper, we conduct a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to identify the primary studies that use OLM along with ITS. Among the 935 papers retrieved from seven digital libraries published to December 2019, 15 papers are finally included after applying our exclusion and inclusion criteria. We then identify the main types of students’ interactions with the OLM-based system, data used to support OLM approaches, methods used to evaluate OLM contributions and visualization models used with students. We also look for evidence of the benefits of OLM to ITS students. In summary, the main findings of this work are: (1), most of the OLM approaches use inspection and negotiation for student interaction, with a positive indication for negotiation, since students feel more confident in updating their student model. (2) several types of visualizations are used - i.e., skill bar and chatbox are more used; and (3) results reported from controlled experiments suggest that using OLM - in comparison to not using OLM - may lead to an increase in learning performance. We conclude this work by showing promising research opportunities that are quite important and interesting but underexplored in current research and practice.
