Impacts of climate change on local livelihoods in western Amazonia

RESUMO:

Climate change is perceived in different ways around the globe. Impacts may vary according to
location, social dynamics and others. In fact, societies that are more dependent on natural
resources for their maintenance feel the effects of these impacts more disproportionately than
others do. The empirical knowledge of these communities can contribute to fill gaps in
scientific knowledge, in the identification of local vulnerabilities caused by the impacts of
climate change, as well as in the elaboration of prevention and mitigation strategies to these
effects, which can contribute to the maintenance of the richness of Amazonian socio-
biodiversity. Here we investigated the perceived effects of climate change on the use of
natural resources that structure the livelihood activities of riverside communities in western
Amazonia. Thus, to investigate climate change impacts on the ecological and social spheres of
these communities and to identify the most impacted livelihood activities in view of the
incidence of climate changes and especially of extreme weather events we used as an
important ally the local ecological knowledge developed by these communities for
generations. We visited several riverside communities, conducted semi-structured interviews
with people of great local ecological knowledge and then held focus groups. This information
was added to another database, with information collected regarding the quantification of
impacts on subsistence activities practiced in these communities. Community members
pointed to a higher incidence of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods, small
floods, changes in the rainfall, changes in temperature, changes in the frequency of floods such
as duration and size, and changes in the wind as the causes of the changes observed in
livelihood activities. According to the perceptions of community members, climate change has
different impacts on the different livelihood activities carried out. Moreover, respondents
indicated that these impacts can be positive, that is the impact can be beneficial for the
activity, or negative, for impact that cause damage or impair the development of the activity
